Visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park!
These majestic mountains are the oldest on earth. It's a land of subtle contrasts, sublime mile high peaks, lush valleys and rushing rivers. It is also the most popular National Park in America with over 9 million visitors a year and 550,000 acres of protected land.

Western North Carolina has many vacation possibilities for visitors of every age and interest. You can visit the nation's favorite national park, drive and cycle scenic roads and hike the Appalachian trail or Pisgah National Forest. You can even ride the high ridges of the Smokies on horseback.

Horseback Riding

Indian Crafts in Cherokee
At the heart of the Smokies, the Cherokee Indian Reservation offers a rare opportunity to explore ancient Cherokee homeland. The Blue Ridge Parkway starts here, as well as miles of trails to hike, rivers to tube and raft, and trout streams rated by experts as some of the nations best.

Or marvel at the scenic beauty of Carolina Mountains aboard the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. You'll ride the rails past historic countryside, cascading rivers, and majestic peaks.

River Rafting
This area has always attracted visitors for its cool summers, dramatic autumn color, and lush springtime. Delightful old mountain towns like Waynesville, Asheville and Maggie Valley have plenty of southern hospitality to share. There's nightlife and music for every taste, from bluegrass and country to jazz, folk and contemporary. Every year Folkmoot attracts entertainers from all over the world for a festival of music and dance.

If you're in the mood for mental stimulation, you may enjoy an evening at the Haywood Arts Repertory Theatre featuring cutting edge contemporary drama, original plays, and world classics.
Biltmore Estate

Mountain golf is played in the highlands. Try one of seven golf courses where breathtaking beauty serves as a backdrop for the unique challenges of our mountain terrain.

In winter the Cataloocheee ski area in Maggie Valley offers trails for beginners and a 740' vertical drop for experts .

For a more civilized experience visit Biltmore Estate in Asheville, a 250-room French Chateau built by George Vanderbilt in 1895. The tour includes house, gardens and winery.

Of course there are many more things to do. Most of all we hope you will have plenty of fun on your visit, whatever your choice of activities may be.
